You Can’t Keep a Good Team Down: WRFC U13 Warriors With Manager Dan Wheatley and Coach Oli Parry

Warriors by name, Warriors by nature…today our U13s kicked off their League Cup campaign in style, with a 10-1 away victory against Division 4 Mitcham Park Juniors.  The match provided a debut for Nick Humphries and several of the newer Warriors came into their own by adding to the goal tally.

Still yet to hit their true form at 11-a-side, Warriors needed to concede their opponent’s only goal at 19 minutes to really get started.  A spirited equaliser within two minutes (and a debut goal) from Matt levelled things out and from that point, Warriors kicked their way up through the gears.  Kyle was next on the scoresheet with his debut Cup goal to put the Warriors 2-0 ahead.  Free kick supremo Charlie added to the first-half tally with a direct free kick from range, leaving Matt to score his second just before the break and put some clear blue Worplesdon water between the two teams.

4-1 up at half-time was obviously a good place to be and allowed Gaffer Dan Wheatley and Coach Oli Parry to rotate players and try some different options.  Charlie hit home another magnificent free kick from range a minute or so into the second half to make it 5-1 and from that point Warriors coasted.  Matt clinched his hat-trick in the 46th minute, operating unmarked in what looked like acres of space.  Then it was the turn of Marc to score, after having dropped back into an attacking midfield role.  A quick throw from Joe was chested down and hit on the half-volley to make it 7-1 to Warriors.  Joe was subsequently a scorer himself in the 55th minute; a left-footed effort from an Alex assist.

The crowd had to wait all of eight minutes for another goal, ably supplied by Alex at close range to make it 9-1, with some fantastic link work from our forwards preceding his shot.  Not to be outdone – and to secure his own hat-trick – Charlie latched onto a perfect pass from Alex to slot away the team’s 10th goal in the closing minutes of the match.

Thanks to Christian as lino, to Oli and Emily for tactical and moral support and to Peter for looking officious in his hi-vis Pitch Marshal vest!
