Grandfather, 69, Makes Debut in Goal (And Loses 10-1….)

Roy GreatorexHats off to 69 year-old Roy Greatorex (pictured), from Crofton, Wakefield, who recently made his debut for amateur football team Fieldhead Hospital between the sticks.

Sadly, experience proved no match for youth and Roy’s team lost 10-1 in the Wakefield and District League fixture against Crofton Sports at Thornes Park.

Roy could be seen wearing boots that first saw action in the 1960s and a trademark flat cap that he could often be found wearing during the miners’ strike of 1984 and 1985.  He was swift to point out that he only let four of the 10 goals in, as he did not play the entire game.

Fieldhead Manager, Neil Thompson, commented that his new recruit had done ‘remarkably well’ for a man of 69, although he joked: ‘….It might be another 69 years before we give him a second game’.
