U17 Hurricanes Show No Mercy

WRFC U17 Hurricanes 11-0 St Francis

After a week off from league action, the U17’s visited Park Barn for the local derby versus St Francis.

The previous week had seen the Hurricanes hit the road again for a friendly against West Byfleet Scorpions, used to assess goalkeeping alternatives, whilst giving Hurricanes ‘keeper Horton some much needed exercise, on pitch.  We didn’t learn too much about potential ‘keepers as the Hurricanes cruised to a 9-1 victory, however Horton showed himself to be very adept out on pitch and totally unselfish with the goal at his mercy.

Today, for the first 20 minutes the slow-starting Hurricanes adopted a 4-4-2 formation and set about St Francis without any fluidity.  The early exchanges saw St Francis using the aerial bombardment method, with Worplesdon trying their mix of shooting from range and quick passing.  The Hurricanes back division were adjusting to life looking skyward and the rest of the team looked complacent as the Hurricane’s scored their first after 20 minutes.

The Hurricanes settled, and were moving the ball around to better effect with St Francis continuing with route-one football.  The first half ended with Worplesdon 4-0 up, the pick of the goals was a perfectly-directed Rodrigues header from a Davies cross.

Four substitutions and switching to a five-man midfield helped the Hurricanes move through the gears and really set about St Francis.  The second half was one-way traffic, with the ball spending most of the half at the correct altitude in possession of the now rampant Hurricanes.  Chances came and the goals followed.  St Francis were always looking to score and managed a few excursions up field and came close to a consolation.

Seven, second half goals gave the Hurricanes an 11-0 victory.

Rodrigues had his second hat-trick in two games, Williams had scored a ‘stunner’ from 30 yards and Boyton returning from a lengthy injury, scoring from 30 cm.

Scorers:  Rodrigues 3  Habgood 2 Williams 2  Bennett, Boyton, Davies, Foster 1 a-piece.

It’s very hard to assess the full potential of the 15 Hurricanes until they are tested to the full.  For now, they are playing well and enjoying Sunday mornings and the ever-increasing numbers viewing are enjoying the spectacle.

The Hurricanes are next appearing ‘Up the Slope’  v Hampton Youth U17 on Sunday 18th October; 10am.
