Ahoy There! Under 7 Pirates With Coaches Rob Monks and Dave Blake

The rain held off for us, as with some trepidation, following eight heavy defeats in the Rendell Group, U7 Pirates prepared for their first Cup placing game. For the first time ever, we were leading at the end of the first quarter. In fairness, I think Woking Cougars were the better team in that first ten minutes but were unable to convert their opportunities. This complete change in our fortunes really galvanised the Pirates and they played the best football that we have seen yet. They were unafraid to tackle and showed great energy and teamwork. The goals just kept on coming, courtesy of Scott, James and Charlie – and an unfortunate own goal by the Cougars’ ‘keeper.

In fairness to our opposition, they remained undaunted and the entire game was positive, friendly and enjoyed by all. As parents we could hardly believe what we were seeing and we realised that success on the football field is a very ‘heady’ feeling. Our Man of the Match was James and at the final whistle it was hard to tell who was happier, the boys, coaches or parents!
