Warriors Smiling Despite the Colt

A sloping and bumpy pitch this week saw the Warriors performing in slow motion during a half where the team stooped down to the opposition’s level.

Although in control, the Warriors didn’t take their chances early on and should have been comfortably ahead by half time. Instead, a scrambled goal saw Charlie nudge the ball on target for the ball to be bundled in off an opposition player. 1-0!

Warriors stepped up their game in the last five minutes of the first half and again we saw great link play between Marc and Jack to calmly slot home –  only to be ruled offside (marginal!).

Second half we saw a more determined team playing some good football. In particular, Charlie and Jack skipping past the opposition and delivering some great crosses. The second goal was from a corner when Charlie crossed for Joe to get something on the ball and directed the ball into the corner. 2-0!

Relieved by this second goal, Warriors pinned Colts in their half and pressed, with Marc continually battling with Jack to create himself a chance – when at 46 minutes, a shot from Jack was spilled by the Colts’ ‘keeper onto the waiting feet of Marc at close range to make it 3-0 to Warriors.

Joe, Jacob and Alex saw efforts go close but the Warriors failed to capitalise on their efforts today. Late on, Darcey was called upon to remain calm at the back and numerous times swept up in a cool manner.  She saved Warriors from conceding a sure goal towards the end of the match when she stood up to an opponent who was trying to run onto a loose ball, calmly but sure-footedly hooking it over the frustrated attacker.  Leon, largely untested today, pulled off an excellent save to ensure the Warriors kept a clean sheet. Jacob, Adam and Ty played in unfamiliar positions today and should also be credited for their efforts, as should the parents and our Lino Cristian, still smarting from the reputational damage he suffered in South London last week!  Well done Warriors; a real team effort today.
