WRFC U14 Trojans Rob The Diamonds!

Abbey Rangers Diamonds 2 – 4 WRFC U14 Trojans

Sunday 5th February 2017

A cold morning and a determined opponent saw the U14 Trojans return from Addlestone Moor with a hard-fought and extremely competitive victory against Abbey Rangers Diamonds.

Trojans, struggling for numbers, took a squad of only twelve to the game and had Adam and Captain-for-the-day Tristan declare slight injuries after the warm up.

The game started evenly with both teams testing each other out.  Trojans trying to play their passing football against the more direct style of the Diamonds.  There was no quarter given by both sides, resulting in a frantic battling match.  The Diamonds were awarded a hotly disputed free-kick on the edge of the Trojans’ area midway through the half and the resulting free kick was fired into the net.  A touch of quality from the Diamonds striker. Half time: 1-0 to the Diamonds.

A substitution and a couple of positional changes were made to try and overturn the lead.  Unfortunately they did not have the desired effect as the ball was half-cleared from the Trojans’ box and sat up perfectly to be smashed from the ‘D’ at the edge of the box into the roof of the net.  Fantastic finish, 2-0 Diamonds.

It was beginning to look like one of those days, only 25 minutes left – when after some good play, Adam sprung the Diamonds’ offside trap.  As the ‘keeper advanced towards him, Adam lobbed him from 20 yards and one bounce – and in: 2-1.    The pendulum was swinging as the Trojans’ players found extra energy in their legs. Captain Tristan seemed to be taking the fight to the opponent and broke down the left wing and just kept running until he found himself within range and unleashed a bullet of a strike that couldn’t have been any more: top corner, 2-2.

Trojans were now knocking on the door and saw Adam get away again.  After practising the first time, once again he lobbed the advancing ‘keeper, putting Trojans 3-2 up.  Aaron completed the comeback after getting a well-deserved individual goal to make it 4-2.

This outstanding win was only possible due to the brilliant performances of all the players involved, but special mention to Jacob F for his marshalling of a very strong Diamonds’ centre-forward and to man of the match Fin for a rock-solid and calming performance in goal.   Final score 4-2 away win, as Trojans move to joint second.
