WRFC U14 Lions Battle for Top Spot

Following a narrow defeat only two weeks ago, the Lions were looking to gain revenge and reclaim top spot with a change in formation of 4-1-4-1, with Matt sitting in front of the defence and Archie leading the attack.

The game got under way in blustery conditions and following a really long throw-in, a Meadow Sports forward was to be seen bearing down on goal….0-1 after just 5 minutes and not the start the Lions were looking for.

Meadow had the momentum and the long throw tactic was soon causing our defence more problems.

The Lions quickly showed their fighting spirit and started to put pressure on the away defence and were the better team for the last 15 minutes of the first half – but struggled to create any real clear-cut chances. Half-time and the score remained 0-1.

The second half got under way, with the Lions looking to use the wind to their advantage. However, they still couldn’t find a way back into the game and were then undone from a ball over the top fed to a Meadow striker, making it 0-2.

A change of formation back to the usual 4-4-2 was in order, yet the Lions still couldn’t find a way through. A Jack corner led to a few easy moments and a second led Lewis to turn and shoot, mwhich brought a great save from the Meadow ‘keeper, with some claiming that the ball had crossed the line.  Again, it just wasn’t to be their day and to make matters worse, they were caught out again with another ball over the top to make it 0-3 on 65 minutes. The Lions failed to score for the first time this season.

The boys all showed great determination as we came up against a better team.  A special mention for Matt, Oscar and MoM Will – and a big thank you to John Gales for running the line and to Luc Horncastle for refereeing the game at short notice.

We go again in 2 weeks. #COYL
