WRFC U13 Warriors Shine Brightly Against Sheen

WRFC U13 Warriors 5 – 1 Sheen Lions Pride U13

Sunday 27th November 2016

Warriors cemented their position in the top half of the table today, with a convincing win at home against Sheen Lions Pride. There was some good early pressure from Warriors, matched eventually by Sheen after they had settled into their game, rendering the first twenty minutes a fairly even contest.

Matt broke the deadlock on the twentieth minute, with an impressive side-footed effort from a good distance out, that spun high into the air and dropped in over the Sheen ‘keeper’s head.  Within seven minutes, Kyle made it 2-0, latching onto a low Charlie cross at close range.  There was worrying drama in the last five minutes of the first half as Joe intercepted a Sheen goal kick and after slotting the ball through, received it back unexpectedly on his ear, courtesy of a high-velocity shot on goal from Charlie, requiring Joe to take to the bench until half-time.

Leon was called into action early in the second half to make the first of several fine saves today. However, it was Jack who removed the pressure in the 40th minute with a fine unassisted goal, to make it 3-0 to Warriors.  Sheen were certainly getting their chances, courtesy of some cleverly-delivered long balls but they lacked a clinical finish in the final third, frequently coming up 1 v1 against Leon, who was at the top of his game today.

Matt scored the second of his brace in the 53rd minute, from a Joe assist and nearly created a scoring opportunity for Charlie a few minutes later with a well-delivered flick header that had his team-mate scorching down the near-side touchline with the ball, only to shoot wide of goal. 4-0!

The clincher came in the 64th minute after Marc delivered a well-weighted free kick into the box, which Joe leapt at with his head.  The ball ricocheted off the post and into the scrum, eventually falling nicely to Charlie for a tap-in, to make it 5-0.

Sheen to their credit didn’t give up and earned themselves a consolation goal in the final minute of the game. A well-delivered cross from the far corner was just a hand too high for a crouching Leon, leaving an unmarked Sheen striker to tap home inside the box.

Special mentions in the post-match team talk for Adam and Leon.  Thanks to Oli Parry for his support today and to Christian for lino duties.  Birthday greetings to Mel Walter whose need for the directors’ chair during much of the 70 minutes was plainly apparent!
